내용 | I have another question here. The word, "negate" as a verb, makes me confused since it seems to have a negative meaning in itself. From my understanding, the meaning of it is "to cause something in no effect". However, it looks still obsecure, not clear to me. I've found a couple of examples of it, which are as followes: - Alcohol negates the effect of the medicine. -> this one seems clear. It seems to mean that if we drink alcohol while taking the medicine, it won't in effect. - The fact that she lied about her work experience negated the contract. -> this one makes me confused. Does this mean that due to her lie about the work experience, her contract -- maybe here a employment contract -- couldn't last any more. she kind of got fired owing to the lie. Hopefully I'm right about it. Thanks, Best regards, Jaeho Lee |

Negate means to nullify or make ineffective. When we are hired by a company, we sign a contract stating if we lied on our resume's, we can be immediately fired. So this sentence is indeed referring to her work contract most likely. However, negate has a negative meaning, but because it's a verb, it doesn't count as a negative in a sentence. I mean we can use other negative words (no, don't, not) with it and it's not considered a double negative. I hope this helps! |
